A Mountain Getaway Renovation- Toxin-Free Renovation And Furnishing

Vacations is one of the functions most of us aim for. Many of us look for outdoor and nature-oriented destinations. We look for sunshine, fresh air, and outdoor activities.   These are some of the elements that refresh our minds and bodies.  Our interior indoor air quality should be as healthy as possible to continue good health.

Volatile Organic Compounds or “VOCs” are toxic elements as opposed to natural elements in balance.  VOCs tend to break down systems in the body with repeat exposures.  Somewhat like VOC but to a much lesser degree, some natural elements can be toxic. Future blogs will explain and give examples. VOCs create breakdowns with exposure in small quantities, or in small quantities over a long period, or with a one-time exposure. Every system’s tolerance level is different. Why not keep it clean and use the most harmonious and least toxic materials for interior and furnishing finishes.  Here is what we did with this project:

1-Paint the lavender-blue wall with a zero-VOC paint

2-Use a dining table that was in storage waiting for a new home. We removed the old dining table and is in storage, waiting for a new life cycle.

3-Dining Chairs

A-Dining chairs were sanded and finished with non-toxic wood stain to match the dining table

B-The seat cushions were reupholstered with Recycled Polypropylene materials. In our experience, it had no outgassing of VOCs such as petroleum byproducts.

4-Other Wood Furniture

The previously dated and unattractive coffee table, bedside tables, and desk were all finished with the same wood finish. The knobs were painted blue for a splash of color with the same brand zero VOC wood paint.

5-Art

We added several art pieces at great prices.  Some are on canvas, some are on recycled wood, and some are vintage art applied to the canvas.  Through this selection, we kept the VOC outgassing to a minimum.  Some acrylic paint brands have almost no outgassing, but some are high in order and acrylic release. To ensure that we do not introduce VOC outgassing into the residence, we allowed a few weeks for the art to outgas in a storage area.

6-Decoration

To create a charming mountain atmosphere, we used old books, bought clay pottery from nearby stores or art fairs to support the local economy. Other decorative items are either upcycled, renewed, found a new home, or bought locally. We stayed committed to conscientious consumerism in all aspects.

6-Rug in Kitchen

We managed to find a bamboo rug with vegetable dye and a gentle pile.  It is easy to walk and stand on.  It is easy to clean.

7-Bedding and Towels

Bed duvets are either Cotton or Linen.  Pillows are downmixed with other natural materials. Sheets are cotton and bamboo that feel like silk but not slippery.

Bamboo grows rapidly, although some do require more water than other plant materials because growing time is shorter, less water is required ultimately.

Bath towels are made of Certified Organic Cotton.

8-Cleaning

This property was in a rental program and needed deep cleaning.  We used an old

Natural carpet cleaning soap with bio-enzymes. We know that it worked because of the color of the water. The upholstery was cleaned with the same product.  The colors become brighter once again. A greater amount of eco and non-toxic cleaning solutions have come to the marketplace. They are worth exploring.  There is a time for using heavy chemicals. Hopefully, they are used outdoors, with negative air pressure or open windows and doors for fresh airflow. Disposing of chemicals responsibility is environmentally important.  Each locality has its own set of rules, regulations, and recommendations. Cleaning the natural way is a healthier option for all family members, friends, water sources, and environmental concerns.

Environmentally, what we put out is what we get back from the air, water, food, and all other consumer goods. The more toxicity is created, the more we damage the earth and our own health.  More about this can be read on the NIH’s website. The guests at this residence enjoy healthy indoor air. Weather conditions allow it to circulate fresh air throughout the house, especially if heat or fireplace has been on for many hours or days.  Opening window coverings to allow sun rays is another important element that contributes to good health.
